December is here, and the countdown to 2024 is on. Christmas brings about all types of emotions, activities and opportunities to make an impact. Whether it is shoveling the neighbors sidewalk, bringing up their trash cans, or even keeping an eye on all of the gifts Santa or your favorite box truck/Sprinter van bring, we can all help one another. Our focus has been to shed light on non profits and local for profit companies in the Jefferson County area.
Berres Brothers Coffee Roasters
You can get your coffee plenty of places, but why not keep those dollars in the community? Berres Brothers Coffee Roasters has been roasting the competition and grinding up the goods in Watertown for over 50 years. A family and veteran owned company, Berres Brothers focuses on creating a brew that is unique for each addict, I mean coffee enthusiast. Pete Berres has carried on his fathers dream of providing a spark to Wisconsin workers’ days. "We believe that coffee has to be good and consistent, because we know there’s nothing quite like sitting down and enjoying a good cup of coffee. "
Berres Brothers can be found in grocery stores across Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and even Michigan. For the true experience, stop out to the Beanery located at 202 Air Park Dr, Watertown to find all the varities imaginable and watch the coffee go from raw beans to the finsihed product. Don't forget to peruse their local vendor areas for holiday gifts or just to pick up the latest tumbler with a message to match your mood. Jefferson Food Pantry
Food scarcity became a front burner issue during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Many families continue to struggle to find reliable access to fresh food, particularly fruits and vegetables. Sara Ariss, Executive Director of the Jefferson Food Pantry, had a similar experience during the pandemic and decided to get involved. After volunteering she decided it was time to step up and take on a leadership role. The food pantry is able to provide families access to frest fruits and vegetables, dairy and meat products, as well as shelf stable items. Additionally, the pantry offers a variety of household and personal hygiene products to ensure that the families have at least some of their needs met.
The food pantry offers multiple unique programs as well. In partnership with Palermo's, they are able to provide pizza to community members weekly outside of the normal shopping times and restrictions. Additionally, they are a part of the Senior Stockbox Program, which is a 30 pound box of shelf stable food that can be picked up or delivered by DoorDash to low income seniors. For eery $1 that is donated, the pantry is able to provide an astounding three meals to community members in needs. If you are interested in volunteering, donating or to learn more, check out our interview with Sara.
Our communities are stronger when we support one another, whether it is over a cup of coffee or by supporting your local food pantry. Have a happy holidays and let us know what other local leaders we should highlight!
