Why I Choose to Live in McFarland

Just ten/fifteen minutes from downtown Madison, McFarland is often an overlooked suburb which offers small-town charm, great schools, lake access, and plenty to do for families and adults alike. McFarland is packed with parks, playgrounds and lakefront views. Here are a few notable ones:

  • McDaniel Park: Picnic, swim, or launch your boat on Lake Waubesa. There is a fantastic kids playground here, as well as a beautiful boardwalk over the lake that is perfect for walking and biking!
  • Brandt Park: A family favorite with sports fields and playgrounds.
  • Capital City State Trail: Perfect for biking into Madison – did you know the McFarland bike trails connect you to downtown?

As for food, there are several local options that are each phenomenal choices.

  • Breakfast- Luke’s Café is my personal favorite, and they recently moved into a beautiful new location just north of their old location on US-51. My kids love the delicious variety of pies and special treats in their glass case!
  • Maple Tree Supper Club: Classic Wisconsin dining with fantastic Old Fashioneds, Fish Fry, and prime rib. I am a big fan of their salad bar, too!
  • Angelo’s – a great option for a sit-down Italian dinner with a lovely outdoor patio. Great cocktails and nightly specials!
  • Lily’s Ice Cream Parlor – this is one of McFarland’s best kept secrets; serving Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream and with plenty of special sundaes and treats, this ice cream parlor also doubles as an arcade with fun and nostalgic games in the back! Great space outside as well for the kids to run around.

McFarland is known for friendly neighbors, walkable neighborhoods, and excellent schools—all just a short drive from Madison. It is where my family and I call home. Thinking about moving to McFarland? I’d love to show you around or help you find your perfect home here!
